Many Midwestern states raise trout to stock in local ponds in and around population centers during the cooler months. Some of these states have naturally occurring trout populations, but only in very limited geographical regions. Trout stocking gives anglers an opportunity to target species that are otherwise out of reach short of a lengthy drive.
In my state (Nebraska) trout stocking gives people in the eastern portion of the state, including the population centers of Omaha and Lincoln, the ability to catch trout without having to drive four or more hours to find native trout waters. They are fun to catch and good to eat.
Most of these states start stocking trout in the fall and then continue in the spring once the ice is off the lakes. Since trout are a cold water species, the intent is that the trout will be fished out of the lake or pond by the time summer comes around as they cannot stand the summer water temperatures.
Be sure to check your state’s regulations for fishing and harvesting these trout. Many states have special rules when it comes to permits, special seasons, or harvesting.
