At Ordinary Outdoorsman, we are all about encouraging the everyday person to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Fortunately, we are not alone in this task. Every state provides encouragement to their residents to get outside and enjoy. This year, Nebraska announced their “Trout Slam” program to highlight Nebraska trout fishing.
Nebraska Trout Fishing
Nebraska is not really known for its trout fishing, however, there are several streams and lakes where these sought-after fish can be caught.
The state does have four different trout species within its boundaries. Rainbow trout are perhaps the easiest to catch across the state since there is an active stocking program which puts rainbow trout within a short drive of most of Nebraska’s residents. The other trout species will take some effort to find and catch.
Anglers who catch all four species of trout can earn a certificate, pin, bragging rights, and of course the satisfaction of accomplishing something other than sitting in front of the TV or staring at a smartphone.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission challenges anglers to catch all four species of trout available in Nebraska and earn recognition for doing so through the new Nebraska Trout Slam.
Beginning in spring 2018, anglers who catch all four species of trout – rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat – can earn a certificate, pin and bragging rights.
“Nebraska’s cool-water streams and the great trout fishing opportunities they provide are one of the state’s best-kept secrets,” said Nebraska Game and Parks Commission fisheries outreach manager Daryl Bauer. “We hope the Trout Slam encourages anglers to take advantage of this tremendous resource.”
Most of Nebraska’s year-round, cold-water trout fisheries are found in the northern and western parts of the state – often in scenic areas well worth visiting. Additionally, Game and Parks stocks catchable-size rainbow trout at dozens of locations across the state each year.
